Over half of our bodies are made up of water, so it is important to stay hydrated, especially during hot summer months.
Without consuming sufficient amounts of water, our bodies begin to react in different ways. Signs and symptoms like headaches and dizziness point toward what could become dehydration. Dehydration takes a toll on your body’s ability to function properly. Water is responsible for regulating body temperature, is required for breathing, and it makes up 75% of your brain.

Such signals, or symptoms, of dehydration include dry or sticky mouth, low or no urine output, and sunken eyes. In the case of severe dehydration, a person can become lethargic or comatose. If you show any of these symptoms, it is best to begin drinking fluids in small amounts. Consuming fluids too quickly may lead to vomiting. Drinking electrolyte beverages or freezer pops have been found to be effective, though drinks with too much sugar may cause or worsen diarrhea.
Prevention
If you plan on spending extended time in the sun, it is important to fill up on water early, while also staying hydrated throughout the day. A way to measure your own hydration is by observing the color of your urine. The lighter the color, the more hydrated your body is. If the color is dark, it indicates your body’s need for water.
